Overview

Working at Atlassian

Atlassians can choose where they work – whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company.

This is a remote position. To help our teams work together effectively, this role requires you to be located in or adjacent to Pacific Time Zone.

Your future team

We are looking for a Principal Lead Designer, Product Motion & 3D within the Teamwork Platform Design team. In this role, you will report into the Head of Design, Teamwork Platform and join an organization consisting of multiple teams across North America, Australia, and India. You'll play the central role in exploring, defining, and crafting immersive and interactive experiences that both help – and delight – our customers. You are a Team Captain leader, and with your deep understanding in motion design, 3D modeling, and visual craft within a UX context, you will both contribute work individually and - over time - build and lead a passionate team of designers. Your depth of experience in product/UX motion and 3D will enable you to have impact in close collaboration with your cross-functional partners in Product and Engineering to ensure seamless integration across platforms and frameworks from concept through to implementation.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and inspire: Direct a multi-disciplinary team of designers and technical professionals, cultivating a culture of inclusion, collaboration and innovation that inspires excellence in design.

  • Drive creative vision: Develop and articulate a cohesive creative vision that integrates UX motion graphics, 3D design, visual design (and potentially audio/haptic) to ensuring alignment with product goals and user needs.

  • Cross-functional collaboration: Partner closely with Product and Engineering leadership across the company and throughout the design process. Your understanding of various platforms and frameworks will be critical in ensuring that motion, 3D, and visual elements are effectively planned for and implemented to enhance the overall user experience.

  • User-centric design: Advocate for user-centered principles through direct involvement in user research and testing, assessing how motion, 3D, and visual design influence overall usability and satisfaction, and iterating based on findings.

  • Management: Oversee a variety of projects concurrently, ensuring projects meet deadlines while maintaining the highest standards of quality and creativity.

  • Mentorship: Mentor and support junior and mid-career designers both within your team across the company by providing constructive feedback and fostering an environment of continuous learning and development. Contribute to programs outside of Teamwork Platform design which improve overall design capability.

  • Stay ahead of trends: Remain informed on emerging trends in motion design, 3D technologies, visual design (and other related areas, like audio/haptics), and apply best practices to keep our offerings ahead of the competition.

  • Partner with Head of Design and cross functional executives to build energy and coalitions at scale for motion and 3D design in product.

Qualifications

Your background:

  • A strong portfolio that illustrates your diverse range of work in motion graphics, audio, 3D projects, and haptic design, demonstrating clear results and customer impact. A strategic and innovative thinker able to tackle complex design challenges and propose engaging solutions that harmonize visual and auditory elements with haptic experiences.

  • Motivated by the goal of design excellence, eager to embrace new challenges that push the limits of what is possible in user experience.

  • 10+ years of experience in motion design, 3D modeling, and related areas (audio, haptic feedback, etc) feedback within a UX framework for complex/enterprise-level software

  • High proficiency in industry-standard design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, After Effects, Figma, C4D, ProTools, etc.) and a solid understanding of various programming languages or frameworks used in design implementation.

  • Demonstrable experience in creating clarity in high ambiguity through impactful design solutions to challenging problems

  • A strong portfolio that illustrates your diverse range of work in motion graphics, 3D projects, and visual design, demonstrating clear results and customer impact.

  • Passion for storytelling, the ability to bring design direction to life with compelling narrative.

  • An effective communicator who excels in collaboration, with a firm understanding of design best practices, engineering principles, and the ability to articulate those concepts and technical requirements clearly across disciplines.

  • Experience balancing customer needs with business goals, market viability, and technical feasibility

  • Facilitation and cross-functional collaboration skills: you can demonstrate the ability to integrate the work of multiple teams, solicit and synthesize feedback, and facilitate design discussions that lead company wide outcomes

  • Demonstrative experience in audio, visual, and haptics a big plus
